Challenge Overview

Perceptual Computing technology is redefining the boundaries between human and computer interaction. Intel invites you to claim your share of history by designing new, leading edge perceptual computing Apps for the 2014 Perceptual Computing Challenge.

Using the 2014 Software Development Kit (SDK) and new 3D gesture cameras, participants will compete for their share of nearly $1,000,000 (USD) in cash and prizes. Along the way they will be challenged to envision new and innovative ways that this technology can be implemented into computing experiences on Desktops, Laptops and Tablets.

Gaming + Play

Learning Edutainment

With your app, learning isn’t a snap, it’s a swipe. Your software leverages Intel® RealSense™ Technology to integrate all 10 fingers, 8 unique gestures, and raw depth data capability for creating interactive e-books,edutainment games and other learning apps.

Interact Naturally

An extensive library of gestures, facial analysis algorithms, and speech recognition algorithms will allow you to build interfaces that are natural to the user—and organic to the experience.

Collaboration/ Creation

Create apps that overlay presenters into the applications, allow two people to share an experience online, or help a user to create compelling original content using this “digital green screen.”

Open Innovation

Pioneer

The Pioneer Track is the public track of the Challenge, open to any and all developers who wish to take part. Competing in the Pioneer Track of the 2014 Challenge will be one of the requirements for being invited to future contest’s Ambassador Tracks. Pioneer Track participants will compete only against other Pioneers in the Ideation Phase and Development Phase of the Challenge. The majority of Challenge participants will enter the Pioneer Track, and this is where new your talent can be discovered.

Ambassador

The Ambassador Track is an elite, invitation only component of the Challenge; open only to those developers who submitted a Demo into one of Intel’s 2013 Perceptual Computing Challenges, or the Ultimate Coder Challenge. The bar for this group has been set high, as many of them have already placed in other Intel Developer Challenges. The Ambassador Track participants will compete only against other Ambassadors in the Ideation Phase and the Development Phase; it is a smaller pool, but the stakes are higher.

Ideation Phase: Now Closed

In this first phase of the 2014 Perceptual Computing App Challenge, developers in each track will submit their ideas for approval by our carefully selected panel of judges. They'll choose up to 1,000 Pioneers and up to 300 Ambassadors to move on to the Development Phase.

Pioneer

Phase 1 of the 2014 Perceptual Computing App Challenge Pioneer Track is open to developers from around the world. The 1000 Top Scoring Ideas will be invited into the Pioneer Track Development Phase.

Ambassador

7/28/14 – 9/19/14 Closed

Phase 1 of 2014 Perceptual Computing App Challenge Ambassador Track is open to those teams or individuals who submitted eligible Demos in the list of earlier Intel contests. The 300 Top scoring Ideas will be invited into the Ambassador Track Development Phase.

Development Phase: Now Closed

Winning ideas become reality in the Development Phase. This is your chance to develop, polish, and demonstrate your app for a chance at your share of $1 Million.

Pioneer

12/05/14 - 02/13/15 CLOSED

1000 participants will be invited to turn their Ideas into working Demos. Participants will be loaned the Intel® 3D Camera as part of the development process.

Ambassador

12/05/14 - 02/13/15 CLOSED

300 participants will be invited to turn their Ideas into working Demos. Participants will be loaned the Intel® 3D Camera as part of the development process.

We’re expecting a wealth of great app submissions, so we want to share that wealth with as many talented developers as possible! Winning shares of the $1 Million prize will be awarded via a tiered system.

Haswell NUC (250)

The top 250 scoring demos from Phase 1, across all 5 categories, will receive a Haswell NUC device valued at nearly $600.
